very basic RAM questions

If this question does not seem like it belongs in a tech SUPPORT forum, please let me know. Or if it seems like i should try to find this out on my own, let me know.

If you purchase a stick of RAM, and it says it operates at 533 MHz, what exactally is physically operating at 533 Mhz? Does that refer to maybe data transfer or something?

It's the clock rate that the ram operates on.
That's the speed at which data bits move thru the ram chips.

But, you won't buy a stick of 533 ram unless you're dang'd sure that's what your computer uses. If you're adding more ram to what is already installed, it MUST exactly match the type and speed of the existing ram.

So, just what are we talking about here?

You've left too many blank spaces for us to really help you much.

Cheers Mate!
