adding RAM to HP 7840 pavillion

This older HP computer has 2 sticks of 128MB SDRAM in it originally. I'm trying to upgrade to the max, which is 512MB. I have 2 sticks of 256MB and when I changed it, it wouldn't re-start. I get to the screen where it asks if you want to start in Safe Mode or several other choices. When I look in the BIOS, it has the message that it will take 512 and currently shows 256 in each slot. I then tried removing 1 stick and it will start normally. I have checked bot sticks and they both work separately. I have tried them in both slots as well. Now I have 1 of the origianl 128MB sticks and one of the newer 256 in and I'm getting it to come on normally. Does anyone have any other suggestions?? Or will I just have to live with it the way it is now with one stick of each??? I'm doing this for a friend that wanted the max put in. She also has, at some point, put windows xp home on this older computer. Thanks for any help.

Re: adding RAM to HP 7840 pavillion

I would run memtest86 on each stick of ram individually, normally if the ram is mis- matched or the computer does not like the ram installed it won't post and seeing as you past post and the computer hangs asking you to enter safe mode suggests on of the ram sticks is bad.

Memtest runs operating system independent so you don't need windows to run it you just create a bootable floppy or cd. Run memtest (google to find it) for at least 3 hours on each stick, if one stick shows errors then you know its the bad one
