EMachines T2742 not powering on
A week ago, I tried turning my mom's EMachines T2742 computer on and the blue ring of light on the front didn't show and the computer wouldn't turn on. The fans in the back had stopped working so I was told to get a new power supply. I contacted EMachines customer support and found out what power supply unit to get. I ordered a ATX12V 300 Watt power supply. I installed it today and the fans work. When I switch it on, there is a yellow light in the front that does come on. Unfortunately, the blue light in the front does not come on and the computer doesn't turn on. I am unsure what steps to take next to fix this problem. I am not too familiar with doing all of this stuff, so if anybody has any suggestions, please be specific. Thank you.

Re: EMachines T2742 not powering on
Emachines are notorious for this and its not good news, what happens is the psu fails and takes the motherboard with it about 50% of the time, from there its a guessing game on weather to try another psu or not, sometimes it does work other times as in this case it does not.
My bet is the motherboard is toast, I have replaced motherboards in emachines and it can present problems with the case switch connections that can be over come. If you decide you would like to give that a shot I will look up that particular model and find a board |

Re: EMachines T2742 not powering on
I'm willing to give that a try providing that it's not too expensive. Let's face it, this isn't that great of a computer nowadays, but it was sufficient for my mom to check her email or play card games. Thanks for any help though, it's greatly appreciated.

Re: EMachines T2742 not powering on
I looked into your particular model and there are some problems with replacing the motherboard, this model emachine comes with a restore cd to reinstall windows, if you replace the motherboard with a non emachine motherboard the restore cd won't work so you would have to buy a copy of XP. This coupled with the age of the machine and cost of the motherboard I doubt its worth it.
Some emachine models namely the Amd platform come with a operating system disk and a seperate driver disk, these machines allow replacement of the motherboard still using the operating system disk supplied by emachine but this is not the case with your model |

Re: EMachines T2742 not powering on
Wow. Well thank you for looking into this for me. I really do appreciate it. I wish the news was better, but oh well. I doubt I will ever buy another EMachines after this fiasco. Anyway, thanks again.

Re: EMachines T2742 not powering on
I've never read such nonsense in my life. gdiddyk, the news *IS* better. All you have to do is go the new motherboard manufacturer's web support page, type in the model #, and download the necessary drivers. There's probably only four of them (video, audio, network, modem). They install fast, free, and easy. Make it legal by using the 25-character license key printed on the eMachines WinXP COA sticker, and you're done - Windows XP on a new motherboard.
