no power

hi .. just to warn you this is my first post

okay im having a problem with my pc which i built nearly 6 months ago.. it was working fine a week ago and i came to try and switch it on yesterday night and it does not want to switch on ive tested the plugs and just would like some help narrowing what it could be, im not sure what information is needed but i can say the psu does not seem to power on therefore i am presuming it is that but before i go and buy a new one would like some more experianced help as this was my first build.

one thing id like to mension is when the power is connected and then removed i can hear a slight noise as if something is powering down but still does not help in diagnosing a problem

any ideas would be greatly appeciated
