Crashes without any reason

Hello.
I'm having problems with Win XP recently. The applications I've been using, which were always running ok, now crash without any reason.
I'll take few examples.
Firefox - crashes with the error message, sometimes when I run a java application it crashes even without it
Freespace 2,Diablo 2, both old pc games, they crash with an error message, be it unhandled exception c0000003 in D2 or a simple win error message in FS2.

I don't know what could be wrong.
The recent changes in the pc was inserting a new ram ( 512 ), when I had a 256 one.

Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks in advance,
-K

Re: Crashes without any reason

Download a Linux live cd, like knoppix, and boot from the CD, at the boot prompt type memtest and let in run for a long time.

If you are lucky, it will show some bad mem addresses and you got some bad memory.

If not, try putting the old mem back in and see if you have the same problem.

You can download Memtest86 on its own: http://www.memtest86.com/

Run it with only one module installed at a time and see if you get any errors. 2 hours for each module should be sufficient.
