Orange Light on Monitor after matching PSU replacement

I have a Gateway GT5228 (2 years old). PSU died and I replaced it with the exact same PSU ( ATX-300-12EB3) no difference.

Made no other changes to PC.

computer worked fine for a week. Video everything.

then yesterday, I power up the computer, the box runs fine, ahrd drive works, but I got an green then orange light on monitor. No display.

since I have an onboard video and a addtional video card, to test I went over to the on board. It ran fine once again and I used it all evening off the onboard video.

This morning when I turned on PC, green then orange light on monitor again and it is still on onboard video.

so it is not like it never worked.

Thoughts for orange light?

Re: Orange Light on Monitor after matching PSU replacement

when you change the psu you usually go for higher wattage
what is it not working on just the card or the card and the onboard
what psu did you buy
brand
wattage
you would expect to find a quality 550w in there with a video card
pcie requires a min of
26amp output on the 12v+ line
waht model video card is it

I had a ATX-300-12EB3 in the orginal computer with the video card installed on day I bought it two years ago and it has run fine since the day I bought it.

I replaced it with the exact same PSU ATX-300-12EB3 So that I would not have to worry about causing a problem with wattage.

Nothing is different from card to PSU at all. The PSU was a apple to apple replacement (exact same). It is the same PSU model everything that has been with the card for 2 years.

So in summary nothing has changed. It is the exact same PSU and video card as I have always had. I just bought a new PSU of the same model. Therefore wattage, etc should have no bearing.

Re: Orange Light on Monitor after matching PSU replacement

the ATX I bought to replace my failed one last week is the OEM for the PC I have.

therfore it should work with the onboard video no matter what since they came together.

When I moved the monitor cord over to onboard vid, it worked last night but this morning back to green then orange monitor light.

Re: Orange Light on Monitor after matching PSU replacement

So in summary nothing has changed.
yes it has the capacitors on the m/board have been deteriorating for the last 2 yrs and now pull more power to run
this is the reason for putting in a larger wattage
it's easy to check just borrow a larger supply to try in it
ask a friend to try your video card in their computer to check it is not the problem
is it running onthe onboard or not
try a cmos reset then check if the onboard is working
turn the computer off
remove the power lead from the back
take the side off
remove the cmos battery
move the cmos jumper from pins 1 and 2 to pin 2 and 3 and the back to pins 1 and 2
replace the battery
put the side on
replug in the power lead
boot the computer

Argggh, totally did not think about the aging of the capacitors. I dont have a PSU to test with.

I will try the CMOS reset and both onboard and added vid card do same thing after a day so I am pretty sure they are fine.

Grrrrr, I so dont want to buy ANOTHER PSU. Stupid me.

Re: Orange Light on Monitor after matching PSU replacement

Dumb Question:

If the PSU was running the puter just fine on Friday, then PSU died on Saturday, why would not the exact same new OEM replacement PSU run the puter fine on Monday?

Capacitors are only 2 days older than they were when running fine on OEM PSU threee days earlier. Why would capciptors all of a sudden need more power when they ran fine with that power level the whole week before?

Why would a replacement OEM PSU not work in that case?

Re: Orange Light on Monitor after matching PSU replacement

okay so I moved the monitor plug back over the the vid card last night from the onboard (after having to go the other way the day before) and it worked again. Cant wait to see what it does today!

Re: Orange Light on Monitor after matching PSU replacement

because of the cost of psu's it's usually better to borrow one first to check with if you can
when switching over from onboard are you disabling the onboard
