memory question

I have a dell lattitude 830 with 2x2 gb memory, but p only registers 3.25 . is that the max xp 32 bit can use, and if so should I just drop it back down to 3 gig? I hava an xps 1330 coming with 4 gig, but if that one reads 3.25 should I just knock them both down to gig and get 140 back from my two extra 2 gigs? I would just have to use my 1 gigs from my lattitude

Re: memory question

XP and Vista 32-bit installations cap at 3.5GB, so you probably have 256MB reserved for video use. Yes, it is the maximum you can take, though putting in more doesn't actually hurt the system (it just doesn't use it). If there's money involved in staying under the limit, by all means sell those bad boys.

Know that you can use the full 4GB in a Vista 32-bit environment, but a similar workaround has not been introduced for XP, to the best of my knowledge.

You can also install a 64-bit operating system if you're so inclined.

Re: memory question

If it came with 4 gigs then I'll assume it's a 64-bit install, but if not see this Knowledgebase article explaining how to get the most out of your memory in Vista.
