[SOLVED] PSU help - I may have picked the wrong one

I tried to do some searching on symptoms and the like and cant seem to get what I need. I apologize it this is a duplicate post.

I have the following

Silverstone case
Intel 975 XBX2 Mobo
Intel Q6600 Quad Core @ 2.4 (not oc'd)
2 - Seagate SATA 80 in RAID 0
1 - 92mm fan
2 - 80mm fans
1 - Rosewill Z3 CPU cooler with 92mm fan w/ LEDs
1 - DVD-RW w/ lightscribe
4 - 1GB DDR2 Crucial Balistix (4x1gb)
1 - ATI 1650 Pro (passive cooling)
1 - Seasonic 430W 80+ efficient PSU

I wanted to use this PC for capturing, editing, and encoding video. I currently use Vegas 8. During the encoding process the application freezes or produces artifacts in the encoded video.

My possible mistake, I just bought a 550w from newegg and fear I may have made a mistake in doing so.

Is the 430w enough???... the go lite says I need 353w PSU

Am I smoking crack and didnt configure properly and a 550w still wont be enough?

Did I get the correct size? (550w)

Is this crashing even related to the PSU? (I have reinstalled OS 3 times in one week).

Thanks for the help. Much appreciated.

Re: PSU help - I may have picked the wrong one

First, thanks for the link.

Second, judging by the link 430 is quite a bit under the fence. Is this why Vegas will crash when all four cores are 90% or higher during rendering?

Re: PSU help - I may have picked the wrong one

Hardware Monitoring : Andilog
Voltage CPU : 1.19 V
Processor Temperature (Core 1) : 45 °C
Processor Temperature (Core 2) : 36 °C
Processor Temperature (Core 3) : 39 °C
Processor Temperature (Core 4) : 36 °C
:
Video Monitoring : ATI Catalyst Driver
GPU Temperature : 53 °C
:

This is at idle. It seems like the voltage fluctuates a lot as well. I have seen it go from 1.05 to 1.19 in a minutes time.

Thanks for the help. Let me know if you need anything else.

Kevin

Re: PSU help - I may have picked the wrong one

Try running memtest.

I would suggest downloading a Linux live cd, do a search, burn the iso image and boot from the cd then just type memtest.

Let it run to completion, it can take a while.

Re: PSU help - I may have picked the wrong one

I have a RH workstation 4 cd I can get from work. I will run that as soon as I can.

I did try taking a pair out, yet the undesired result was the same.

Re: PSU help - I may have picked the wrong one

I ran the memtest (wow, took over two hours).

2 Pass
0 Errors
0 ECC Errs

I will check the event error log before and after stress testing. I will report back on those results as well.

Thanks, Kevin

Re: PSU help - I may have picked the wrong one

Well, it turns out it was actually the mobo. Swapped it out and everything works like a charm now. Temps are all below 50, encoding can pin all 4 cores without incident.

Thanks for everyones help.
