PSU upgrade
I posted a question awhile back about upgrading my CPU & PSU.
http://www.techsupportforum.com/hardware-support/motherboards-bios-cpu/210647-increase-computers-speed.html I have the new processor now and want to make sure I get the right PSU. A 600 watt PSU was suggested but Hewlett Packard states they only tested my motherboard with a max 450 watt PSU. I didn't find many 450w psu's but do see quite a few 500w's. Should I be concerned with putting a higher watt psu than HP has tested with? (are they being overly cautious?). I checked AMD's specs and my 3800+ is 45w and the 6000+ is 125w so if I upgrade to a 450w PSU that's more than the increase on cpu wattage (psu increase = 150w, cpu increase = 80w). Also; is amperage something I need to consider? I can research and find the amps on all the devices in my system but rather not if unnecessary. The only other upgrade I might make would be another fan if needed (currently running at 31-33 degrees) Lastly; the wiring. Should I think about this now or get the psu first and then take it from there? Thank you. Bob |

Re: PSU upgrade
a power supply will only output the juice needed to run your system ! you need not worry about over powering your system

Re: PSU upgrade
Thank you everyone for the info. Your reply's helped me alot! I ordered the ANTEC TP Trio 650w. It appears to be an easy installation but... I'll be replacing the CPU and it's fan at the same time. So If I may, I'll start another thread later. (In regards to thermal compound vs. paste and the PSU connectors).
The last upgrade I did was a 386 16Mhz to 20Mhz and I had to pedal faster. WWW was "We're Working Weekends". Seriously though, Thank you! ...Bob |
