Bad Smell.

Well I upgraded my PC, same motherboard, different CPU, more RAM.

Well I KNOW it isn't the CPU this is why I'm in this section.
I already had 2 sticks in there of 512. It was PC3200 DDR ram, and then I moved my MB to a different bigger and more coolant case then plug in my better CPU then put in the 1G RAM. The RAM is Kingston 1G Ram, it dosen't say on it if its PC3200, so if its not then it shouldn't frie my MB right?

Well this is what happened. I plug everything in, my 3 HDs, my RAM, CPU, PS, Video card (Radeon 9600XT 128mb), EVERYTHING. Then I turned it one and then I could smell like burning plastic smell coming from the PC, by then I turned it off, I was freaking out that the PC had got fried by the RAM. Turned it back on without the Kingston RAM, No smell but blank screen, no BIOs, the monitor light was still orange like when the PC isn't on, NOTHING on the monitor. I put the Kingston ram back in and no smell but the same. If the RAM was the wrong type wouldn't it just give a memory failure, not frie my MB?

This is a very frustrating thing because I'm only 14 and I haven't got the money to buy more parts little alone a MB! I don't get pocket money and I never get expensive stuff, this computer was like the ONLY thing that i actually had.

Anyways if anyone has a solution to this problem please post it.

My Guess: MB is dead, as well as my other RAM stick.

Re: Bad Smell.

When you installed the MOB in the new case did you make sure there were no extra standoffs on the MOB tray? (Standoff is a Brass hex screw with threads in the other end) there should be one standoff for each screw hole in the MOB. no more no less.
After you installed the new Processor did you clear the cmos?

Re: Bad Smell.

I have no idea how to clear the cmos.. But I already installed a CPU without clearing them. What happens if you don't? I never have with any of my PCs..

what power supply is installed?
to clear the cmos, unplug-destatic-pop the battery out for 30 min.-reset your bios values-save and exit

the power supply is set for 115volts? if you are in the states?

Re: Bad Smell.

Its set to 230V (Australian).. Plus the CPU isn't brand new so it dosen't need thermal grease or anything.

I can't reset my bios because I haven't even got a screen to. I tried using my on-board graphics card to see if the MB is fried, nothing still. My MB is differently dead. Im just not sure if the other RAM stick is or any of my other hardware. Im pretty sure the RAM fried it, because of a rejection issue? Can a PC3200 DDR work with another stick that isn't PC3200? Because it seems like thats what has happened..

Any time you have the heat-sink off the processor you have to remove the old paste and apply new. If you do not you WILL burn up your processor.

To reset the bios remove the power to the system (unplug it). Pull the battery from the board for up to 30 min. I tried using my on-board graphics card to see if the MB is fried, nothing still.
You have to get into the bios and enable the onboard graphics before it will work.

No. normally if you have incompatible ram installed it just won't start.
Because it seems like thats what has happened
