my ram acting up

i had 2 256MB RAM sticks in my comp for almost a year now with no problems but now all of a sudden when i was using my comp it froze so i turned it off and turned it back on and it loads as far as my background picture and then stops nothing on my desktop loads then it gives me a message saying there are not enough resources to access my desktop.the only time it works is when i take out 1 of the RAM leaving me with only 256MB of RAM can some 1 help me so that i can get back 512MB (preferably without buying a 512MB stick because i don't wanna buy 1 and i still have problems)

run memtest 1 stick at a time.
the memory could possibly have a lifetime warranty, check it out.

download it to a floppy
boot off your floppy
[you might need to change the boot order in your bios]
test 1 stick at a time
donate a few hours for testing
