I think I need more power...

I attempted to upgrade my mom's pc with a newer (but still pretty old, cause I'm cheap) motherboard & cpu. The Enlite case has a weenie 250 watt power supply, which worked flawlessly with the old Asus P2B and overclocked Celeron 300a. After I replaced the old mb and cpu with a DFI AD73Pro mb, Athlon XP 1700+ cpu, and 512Mb of PC2700 ram, I saw a little blurb in the DFI mb manual saying the board needs a minimum of 300W electric current. I plugged in the power cord anyway, and I get nothing, nada, zilch. There is an LED that lights for the power to the PCI slots, but that's the only sign of life. I've cleared the CMOS, double checked all the power connections, and the only thing that I changed is the motherboard, cpu, and ram. So, do you think my problem an underpowered power supply, or should I be looking at something else?

Re: I think I need more power...

I agree with you, but is that your best guess as the reason the system will not boot?

Re: I think I need more power...

it's the first thing you look at when emachines is mentioned
general rule of thumb
95-98 200-300w
98-me-300-450w
xp-450+
vista-550+
agp= min 18a on the 12v+ line
pcie=min of 26a
from xp on quality power supplies whereas previously generic would suffice

My System

Re: I think I need more power...

I would definitely get a better power supply. There are 3 models of the XP1700 chip, (266 FSB Palomino Core) Model 6, and (266 FSB Thoroughbred Core A and Core B) Model 8. The AMD website only shows your board to support the model 6 Palomino with a default voltage of 1.75v. I have owned Socket A boards from every manufacturer, but not DFI and cannot see what difference it makes. It either supports 266 FSB or it doesn't, but if your power supply won't power the system, it's a no go. Mike
