Trying to upgrade memory, which to buy
I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop. I have 128 MB RAM and want to upgrade to the max which I think is 512. I have a PIII processor. On Dells site it says I should get this one:
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/c...3&chassisid=-1 I found these on Newegg.com, but am not sure how to tell if they are compatible with my laptop: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...%208200&DEPA=0 How do I know which card to buy to upgrade my laptop? |

Re: Trying to upgrade memory, which to buy
Hey jmsims2,
You can go to Crucial.com and use their on line scanner, which will scan your laptop and tell you what RAM is compatible for you. It's a very useful tool and website which has helped me out alot. It also gives you the ability to buy the RAM there and then at decent prices. If you want to know what the price is in your currency, simply choose your country (top right hand corner of Crucial front page) and then run the scan. Let me know if this helps. |

Re: Trying to upgrade memory, which to buy
Thanks for the tip. So it looks like either of these will work:

Re: Trying to upgrade memory, which to buy
Yep, buying 2 x 256MB sticks should be fine. (I'm assuming that these were the sticks that Crucial advised) This will give you the maximum amount allowed for your machine (512MB)
Just make sure that before touching you RAM modules (new or old ones) you properly ground your self first, as a static discharge from you can kill a RAM module. I normally buy a ESD Wrist strap alongside buying the RAM just to be on the safe side. They are pretty cheap, but worth it. I think that the ESD wrist strap is offered when you buy the RAM modules at Crucial. Good luck. |

Re: Trying to upgrade memory, which to buy
Yes, that is what crucial said I should be buying. I just ordered the two 256 mb and a ESD wrist band. This should make a pretty big difference in my laptop, going from 128 MB RAM to 512, right? Thanks for all your help!
