Ebay memory problem?

Hi all, newbie here.
I have two 512 Mb sticks of RAM in my PC - DDR PC3200 400MHZ.
I bought a 1Gb stick from eBay, with all the same specs, but it arrived today and it doesn't work either on its own or with one of the other 512Mb sticks.
The 512Mb sticks have long, rectangular chips whereas the new 1GB stick has small square chips.

The computer won't even boot up with the new 1GB stick in place, but my motherboard can take a maximum of 2GB (1GB in each slot presumably) so I don't understand why this isn't working.
The seller had listed some known compatible chipsets on the item listing and mine aren't on it, so is that the problem? If it is I'll just resell the 1GB stick on eBay, but how do I know it's not just damaged?
And how do I know what 1Gb stick WILL work with my PC? When did it get so compicated to buy a simple stick of memory? Shouldn't they work with any chipset as long as the speed etc is the same?

Re: Ebay memory problem?

IMPORTANT! Before You Buy Memory

try the crucial scan on this tutorial
you might try clearing the cmos first then try the stick
pop the battery out after you unplug the rig, de-static, remove the battery for about 30 minutes.

memtest, to check your memory
