Doubling amount of RAM decreased my Vista Score.
Hi,
I had 2GB of ddr2 667 Corsair Value select Ram in my machine (AsusM2V Board) in two 1GB strips. This gave my a vista score for memory performance of 5.9. I added an additional 2 GB in the remaining two slots of identical ram (same manufacturer same part number as original two strips) and now I only get a Vista score of 5.1. My board says it works in Dual mode if first two or all 4 slots are used so it should be running in dual mode. I knew I wouldn't get a higher score as 5.9 is the most you can get but can't understand why my memory is working slower.... any info would be gratefully recieved. Cheers |

Re: Doubling amount of RAM decreased my Vista Score.
Obviously nobody has any idea why this happenned... but the mystery deepens. I've been have having trouble installing drivers for an ATI graphics card which I have now managed to do (sort of) and my memory score has gone back to 5.9
A bit of a mystery. |

the numbers are vista numbers, far from accurate. is the rig running the same or better since the upgrade? thats what important. |

Re: Doubling amount of RAM decreased my Vista Score.
Also, a 32 bit OS can only address 3.2 GB inlcuding your GPU memory. You have 4GB of ram installed as i understand, which is definately why you are getting a drop in performance. Update to Windows 64bit or better still, swap the 2 x 1gb ram modules for 2 x 512mb ones, and that way you will have 3gb in dual channel mode.

Re: Doubling amount of RAM decreased my Vista Score.
Well I think it is running better. Photoshop seems to load much quicker. As I mentioned the score has now gone back up to 5.9 since getting graphoics card sorted out ( don't see how that could have made a difference but it did)
I did know about the 3.2 GB limit (think mine is actually showing 3.3) but didn't know that this would slow things down, I just thought the rest was ignored. I got the 4GB because I was thinking about getting Vista 64 in the future... would that give any noticable improvement in performance? I mainly use Photoshop, Vegas and Cubase 4 which I think all give a machine a fair bit of pounding. |

Re: Doubling amount of RAM decreased my Vista Score.
Thats great, glad its sorted.
Yes, the RAM could slow things down, but if you are not noticing a major decrease in performance, than you are right. That much RAM occasionally causes issues. cheers

Re: Doubling amount of RAM decreased my Vista Score.
If your memory timings are controlled automatically in BIOS. You'll probably find that the latencies have been increased, access will be slower.
The switch from dual channel to assymetric would have caused this, dual channel modules will run at tighter speeds. You could try setting the lattencies manually. Check with your memory manufacturer for the correct voltages mind, and get ready for a reboot if you run them too quickly. Otherwise you could try downloading memset, if your motherboards chipset is recognised it will give you windows access to your memory timings, which you can test temporarliy. then run the vista benchmark score again to see if its th elatencies that are making the difference. You might even find that your memory speed has dropped from 800 to something less I'm running corsair xms cas4 ddr800 dimms in my desktop which if left to bios autoconfig run 1.8v 5 5 5. jeddek memory timings are bulit in to memory and should be overridden when specific chips have been tested at above the standard. They're guaranteed to run at 4 4 4 18 at 800mhz and 2.1v. if i put a 3rd stick in on auto the timings get reduced again. and performance, well at least in a lot of synthetic benchmarks, is reduced.
