RAM problems

I have this 512 ram chip, it plugs in and works, but it makes my computer do stupid stuff like when i try to boot the computer most of the time it restarts itself before it even starts windows and sometimes it will freeze on a black screen, other times it will start windows and say it couldnt load a certain file and that windows has to shut down, but then times it will load normally and when i try to open some programs it wont let me, when i try to open other programs they run for a bit then close theirselves. And after a while the computer will shut itself down, but i dont know what to do about it. Can anyone help me?

here's my specs:(I dont know everthing about all of them)

Bestec 115v
motherboard unknown
Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.53GHz
256mb ram
Intel(R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV/ Graphics Controller
35gb hard drive
Windows XP Home Edition.

Re: RAM problems

is it a custom built computer? If not give the make and model of the computer. If custom built we need the motherboard to be able to help you. download and run everest to get that info
