Question Top ventilated power supplies, do they need a special case?

I am just looking at some quality 700 watt or higher power supplies, such as OCZ gameXstream, and most of them appear to have a 120mm cooling fan that vents upwards. I need to know if I need to have a special case for this type of power supply?

Any help is much appreciated, and I apologize if this was already a thread and I wasn't able to find it, I am a noob

Re: Top ventilated power supplies, do they need a special case?

I have seen some cases where this type of PSU is placed on the bottom of the case and pushed to the extreme front. These models are supplied with an extension power cable.
Antec make them.

is it possible to put this type of power supply in a normal ATX case upside down? Would it still function properly if I did so?

Re: Top ventilated power supplies, do they need a special case?

the power supply will not allow mounting with the fan pointed upwards in normal ATX cases

the 120mm fan you see is desinged to be pointed downwards towards the cpu / the fan is an intake fan and pulls its "fresh cool air from inside the case, thats why case air flow is so ooooooo important, you dont want your psu pulling in air that comes from a blow dryer! or worse yet, an overclocked CPU

hope this helps

best regards

joe
