Can a PSU kill the CPU?

Hi!

I am trying to upgrade my computer to a 8800Gt video board, and that implies a new PSU.

After installing the new PSU, the computer doesn't start: no beeps, no cpu fan reducing speed, no video image, nothing, black screen and the disks and fans working.

The question is: can a change in the PSU toast the CPU? I would like to know it before buying a new one.

Thanks in advance

Re: Can a PSU kill the CPU?

i would have to say it could have killed anything in your computer, however the cpu isthe hardest to bring down and if anthing died it would mostlikly be the ram, motherboard or video card

Re: Can a PSU kill the CPU?

The new psu is the LC Power LC6550GP 550W SilentGiant. The old one is a 250W. Old mobo msi-7301.

Tested the components (cpu, memory, video, psu) in another mobo (asus p5k something) and same results. Nothing.

Maybe the combination of this psu with the old mobo is the cause? Maybe some mobo can not deal with high power psu?

Thanks all. Again.

Re: Can a PSU kill the CPU?

it's underpowered for the new card and cheap low quality psu
you need one in the 650-750w range from a quality maker
preferably the 750w

Re: Can a PSU kill the CPU?

Is this your PC? http://support.packardbell.com/de/it...neymoon_imedia

If so, Via chipsets don't like the G92 based video cards (8800gt & gens 8800gts) and you'll probably need a bios update for the video card to make it a gen1 card (PCI-E 1.0) instead of a gen2 (PCI-E 2.0)

Other than that, I have to agree with Dai's assessment that your PSU is inadequate.
