First of all thank you for reading this topic.
Secondly, I'm a complete newbie with computers but have been doing a bit of research beforehand. I have a Dell Dimension 5000 PC with two 256MB DDR2 PC2-3200 RAM in two of the four slots in the machine. I would like to upgrade it to around 2GB. I used http://crucial.com/uk to scan my machine and it said that it can hold DDR2 PC2-4200, DDR2 PC2-6400, DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot. I was wondering if I were to purchase two 1GB DDR2 PC2-4200 Ram and inserting it with the two 256MB RAMS, would I have any problems? Would the newly purchased RAMS run at its maximum speed or would it be downgraded to the PC2-3200 speed? Do you have any recommendations on what I should do to improve my machine's memory? Do you have any other tips and/or advise? Thank you very much. ~Neko |

Re: Upgrading RAM on a Dell Di 5000
Hello, Neko, welcome to TSF.
If you installed two different speed memory modules, they would both run at the slowest speed. So, if you installed the new memory modules, all of the modules would run at PC2-3200. I would stay away from that. I would recommend simply taking out the old ram sticks and putting the new ones in. Also, be careful with that Crucial website, it is telling you that you can run PC2-6400 memory, I do not think that is correct... Check it out for sure by typing in your service tag number into option 2 here and seeing what speed memory modules come up. (this is only to determine what speed your memory needs to be, you do not necessarily have to buy them from dell.com )
