4gb ram repeating BSOD at windows startup
So i got 2 more gigs of ram recently (matched with the 2gb I have now) and I have had nothing but problems since
There is the illusion of things working, however up until tonight I was getting occasional bluescreens. As of tonight, I got a bluescreen and afterwards Vista would not boot (got to the point where the sounds plays and the logo shows and just had a black screen until it posted again) and xp would die on startup (i got an error 0x1 or something like that with one of the maximize button files for my firewall...fixed by renaming a copy of the close button file) and i get a similar error with desktop.ini (both of the messed up file's names show in green rather than black in explorer). With the 4gb I would get a bsod after showing the firewall error, popped the sticks out and everything works fine. Both xp and vista are the 32 bit editions, yes, I know, x86 only 4gb total address space blah blah blah but plenty of people have had theirs working just fine with 4gb (physical) ram and I would like to as well. Any help you can give me would be appreciated My System: antec smartpower 500 asus m2n-sli deluxe (nf570sli) athlon 5200 evga 8800gts 640 x-fi xtremegamer wd caviar 250 if you need more info just ask! thanks in advance! ~lag |

Re: 4gb ram repeating BSOD at windows startup
The ram could have put your power load over the top. That smart power has an uncomfortable failure rate. with your rig, i would have used the 650 trio.

Re: 4gb ram repeating BSOD at windows startup
So what i really hear you saying is that I should sell it to my friend who is building a budget rig and get a real psu instead of a $50 one? :P If I were to put in 2 2gb sticks would that also create stability issues, or does it depend on the voltage? Is there a way to work around it in the short term?
thanks! ~lag |

Re: 4gb ram repeating BSOD at windows startup
I didnt calculate the load, but it seems as if your are "right there" even without the stress of heat. With the smartpower, the 2nd fan turns on at 70 Celcius, already too hot for the capacitors, which have other issues. Its a 70% efficiency unit, so add 30% to your load when you calculate it. This was a bad line for Antec, their quality lines are great.

Re: 4gb ram repeating BSOD at windows startup
Now that we have established that my PSU sucks (x.x) I must ask, if there wasnt enough juice why would the system even turn on, and why wouldn't I have any issue trying to boot into Sabayon (until it realizes there is no swap drive) or booting and using the sabayon livecd?

Re: 4gb ram repeating BSOD at windows startup
it might not be your supply, all i am saying is that you are borderline, and perhaps the supply is fluctuating. the 32 bit system and 4 gigs of ram still dont float well... speedfan and your bios report would be a little helpful checking your voltages.
Sabayon, and alike, are less resource demanding than a windows based system: Prerequisites and System Requirements for running Sabayon Linux * Live Environment - No 3D Desktop: o i586 Processor (starting from AMD K5 and Intel Pentium) o at least 128Mb of RAM (256 suggested) o a 2D graphics card o a DDC capable Monitor o mouse and keyboard * Live Environment - 3D Desktop: o i686 Processor (starting from AMD K6 and Intel Pentium II) o at least 256Mb of RAM (512 suggested) o an OpenGL capable 3D graphics card (mostly NVIDIA, ATI, Intel, VIA) o a DDC capable Monitor o mouse and keyboard * Installation: o i586 Processor (see above) o at least 192Mb of RAM (256 suggested) o 10GB of free space, that is bare minimum o Internet connection (not mandatory but highly suggested) o a DDC capable Monitor o mouse and keyboard

Re: 4gb ram repeating BSOD at windows startup
Ok well the reason I ask is because I was looking at one of these:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...lue=525%3A7867 /hopes that link works which are all 2.2v modules wheras what I am currently running http://www.newegg.com/product/produc...82E16820141199 are 2v and I really dont want to overload my PSU =/ ~lag Also, you mentioned that having 4gb of ram doesnt work well on 32 bit systems...I was under the impression that you just wouldn't be able to use all 4gb of it? |
