Ram troubles after upgrading cpu.
Hello everyone, I recently upgraded from a Sempron 3400+ to an Athlon 4000+. The installation went fine, and I'm getting about 36 degrees idle, according to sensors view.
Anyway, to my problem. Apparently I bumped my RAM or something as I was trying to unplug my heatsink, because when I tried to turn my computer on I got one long beep, which I've come to learn means my RAM hates me. After fiddling with it, I gave up and put one of my 512mb sticks in the third slot. Right now I'm working fine on that, but I had a few questions for when I put the other 512mb stick and 2 256mb sticks in. 1. Is it necessary for the plastic clips that hold my RAM to be tight? A couple of the clips are loose, and don't hold the RAM tight, but last time I upgraded my RAM I had the same problem, and eventually got it to work. By not tight, I mean that they lift up and get loose when I try to secure both clips onto the RAM. 2. Would the new processor have any chance of affecting my computer's recognition of the RAM? I actually have both 512mb sticks in right now, one in the second slot and one in the third, but only 512mb is being showed. Everest recognizes both sticks, however. Would the two not being in dual-channel be the cause? And finally, 3. What are good temperatures for my processor? I'm using stock cooling that came with this pre-built computer, and have one fan on the back drawing air out, and a two slot video card drawing more air out. I'm getting around 35 degrees idle, and after running 3dmark06 I was running about 42 degrees. Thanks in advance for the help, I'm using a MSI Amethyst-M motherboard, with PC3200 memory. |

Re: Ram troubles after upgrading cpu.
Okay, I got the 2 256 sticks in, and one of the 512 sticks in, but now I have another problem. The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th slots are fine, but one of the plastic clips on the first slots is loose, so when I clamp down one of the side, the other gets pushed up.
It works fine when I don't have either clamp on, but when I have both on, one side is too high and I get the beeping. Now, normally I would just leave the clips off and be careful with it, but if I have one of the clips in the non-secured position, it prevents my graphics card from going in. Anyone have any ideas of what I could do to make the plastic clip not get loose when pressure is put on it? Also, Everest is only recognizing 256mb of RAM and judging by performance, that's all that's being used. Is it possible that this is because I have the RAM in the 2rd, 3rd, and 4th slots, and nothing in the first? |

Re: Ram troubles after upgrading cpu.
I have an MSI Amethyst-M motherboard, installing ddr memory. I've allready had this memory in once, but now one of the clips on the first slot is loose, and won't hold the ram tight enough for it to work.
Any idea where I can get replacement clips? |

Re: Ram troubles after upgrading cpu.
Bah, I would edit, but I can't find the button.
I got the second 512mb stick in, but I had to take one of the 256 sticks out for some reason. Now, I have 2 512's in dual channel, and 1 256 in atm, but everest and task manager's performance things are only showing 766. Any ideas? |
