High pitch whine from PSU

My Computer suddenly died the other evening while I was eating dinner. When I came back to the CPU it was off but making a very high pitched sound. I unhooked all of the peripherals and removed the cover. I cleaned everything out and even tried a different power cord, but all I get is a green light on the motherboard and the whine from the PSU. up until the other night the CPU worked perfectly.

P.S. the PSU's fans do not turn at all when power is supplied

Is this a problem with my PSU or could it be something else?

CPU - 2.8 Dual core pentium w 2 Gig Ram on an Intel board
PSU Antec 450 watt

I need help... Thanks in advance

Re: High pitch whine from PSU

Time to replace the psu(power supply) and hope it did not damage anything else when it went.

That could be a sign of a over worked psu, there has also been soom reports of antecs producing this noise as they age, some call it "coil whine" and there is no known solution.

The fans also not spinning mean the psu has failed

Please read this and pick a recommended psu, if you are unsure list your full specs and some staff will recommend one.

One of our PC's did this and the motherboard ended up being fried. Had the green light and a high pitched whine.

Re: High pitch whine from PSU

If that is the Antec True Power 450, then they are noted (been there and played the game in my shop) for their short life and lack of quality. I would replace that supply and hope that it did not take something with it.

Re: High pitch whine from PSU

Ok, I have replaced the PSU with a Antec 500W and still nothing. I still have the green light on the motherboard but nothing will power up. I have checked the motherboard and checked for any sign that it got fried when the PSU died but there is no evidence of failure. I'm at a loss for what to do. I can't afford to replace everything. could it just be a motherboard or would it be the processor as well?

Please I still need help

Thanks

Re: High pitch whine from PSU

Take the motherboard out of the case and place it on a non-conductive surface of piece of cardboard, then with the CPU/Heatsink fan connected to the motherboard, the ATX connected to the motherboard, one stick of memory, the +12 volt molex, the On/off switch wires, the speaker,......nothing else, no drives, nada nothing. See what happens. If it tries to start up, add something and try again........if it doesn't do anything, take out all the memory and see if it beeps at you real loud. You get the picture, works, then add, if not, then take away all memory....... Post back with results.

Re: High pitch whine from PSU

I have tried everything you asked me to do. I never got anything, not even a beep from the speaker. I guess I need to get a new motherboard. I even tried turning on with out the power switch by jumping the board. It's dead as far as I can tell. At least the little green light stays on.

P.S.
The motherboard is an Intel 945GTP ATX MB. Does anyone know if they are prone to problems?

Re: High pitch whine from PSU

No memory in with no beeps, normally is a bad motherboard.
