check your drives are running in dma mode and have not fallen back to pio mode

how do i do that? i know my main drive is running in ntfs whats weird is it 320 GIG HARDRIVE BUT ITS only reading 290...

in the device manager click on the ide channels and look in the properties section
manufacturers listing of the drives size is not accurate as they work on a rounding figure of 1000mg=1 g,then if it is patitioned you lose more for each partition

the hard drive running the games is sata my back up drive is ide. previous to the sata hdrv i had an ide 120gig that gave out.

dma does not come into it with a sata drive

ok so if dma is not in play what else could i be looking for? given most new mobo's run hdrv's with sata. hmmm this is boggling u think?

try reinstalling your sound card drivers from safe mode with a/virus disabled

try moving the s/card to another pci slot

ok i will try that, would that cause my games to freeze? i really appreciate all the help u have takin the time to offer means alot. to recap i replaced hardware updated all drivers, turned everything off in the background, revamped drivers for video and sound. fdisk and format with crisp os. i am almost ready to take a hammer to the machine and get a xbox i never had this problem before since i started gaming back in the day and frankly its making me feel stupid because i dont know whats casuing the problem

you should not be using fdisk
when reinstalling you should clear the drive with dban and then use the xp disk to format and install
if moving the card does not fix check your tempretures
