PSU problem? I'm not sure

Hi everyone, I'm having a bit of a problem with my computer, I built it a few days ago and have been having a few BSODs (bad_pool_caller) which I thought were being caused by bad ram. Today, when I turn the computer on, the cpu fan will not start and I am hearing short continuous beeping which is the error code for a power failure. When I plug the cpu fan into a different socket, it starts ok, I still hear the beeping though.

My specs are;

Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R motherboard
Intel core2duo E6750
2 x 1GB corsair xms ram
nVidia 7950gx2
Hiper 550w PSU

2x300GB SATA HDs in RAID 0
3x500GB SATA HDs
1x400GB SATA HD
1x160GB IDE HD

I'm a bit worried I might have overloaded the PSU with so many hard drives, is this a possibility? I've had it for a little while and its handled everything I've thrown at it though.

I unplugged everything except the cpu and 1 stick of ram but the problem still remains.

Sorry for such a long post, thanks for any insight into the problem.

Re: PSU problem? I'm not sure

The Hiper power supply is a very weak power supply regardless of the watts that are listed. I think your power supply is not up to this rig.

If this were mine, I would put an Antec Trio 650 in this rig and that will give you enough power to do the job for you. Also, take a look at PC Power & Cooling supplies, Silverstone models, the Thermaltake "toughpower" series, and Seasonic model, OCZ 700 is a very good supply, the Antec Neo He is an excellent series as is the Antec Trio series that I mentioned above.

Do you know someone who has a good power supply that you could try in this computer?

Re: PSU problem? I'm not sure

No, I don't know where I could get a more powerful PSU from, I tried with a no-name 450w PSU and the results were the same. The Hiper worked fine on the same setup but with an AMD 3800+ and different motherboard though. I'm reluctant to buy a new power supply in case that is not the problem.

Re: PSU problem? I'm not sure

If you have a Best Buy or Staples nearby, then you can buy one from there and try it and if it does not pull the rig, take it back for a small restocking fee. That way, you would not incur any large expense to try it.

Oh, one other thing, are you certain that beep code is for a power problem...that might be a memory problem. Is the memory for this board on the manufacturer's QVL list since you took it from another machine? Try one stick at a time and see what it does.

Re: PSU problem? I'm not sure

I've been reading a lot of forum posts about this board (it's actually a GA-P35C-DS3R) and there seems to be common problems with memory timings and the board being generally unstable. I think I'm just going to RMA it and go with a different brand, its a shame because I couldn't find another board at this price with as many SATA ports. I hope the RMA will be accepted. Thanks for the replies.
