What Size PSU Would be best for my system.

Hi,

I will in the next few months be doing a full rebuild and I am wanting to buy an appropriately sized PSU now as my first step.

I want to cut a fine line between having the PSU run at a good lower percentage load level (~50-60%) to cut down on heat and noise emmitted. But I also don't want to go overkill and waste money on a PSU way out of my requirments.

The setup I will be getting should be something like

Quad Core Intel CPU
Either ATI HD 3850 Pro Card (which I read runs at 95W/55nm, but may be wrong).
or Nvidia 8800GT
4 SataII Hard Drives
1 DVD Drive
1 DVD Burner
1 Blu-Ray Drive
PCI Soundblaster sound card
And Possibly 2 extra PCI/PCIe cards.

I will never be interested in SLI (as I would lilkely just buy a newer premium graphics card as opposed to SLI'ing two older ones).

I will be wanting to dual view the PC between my 17" LCD monitor and 32" LCD for Blu-Ray playback.

So what would a good sized PSU recommended for this system?. That is not overkill but has a good size on it to allow it to work at peak efficiency.

Thanks

With my current rig (My system tab under my name), you'll see the power supply I have. I haven't had any problems, even when I plug in an additional firewire PCI card. I also run 4 120mm fans, and I've done upto 6, with no issues.

But 750w might work for you too..

extreme power supply calculator says you need 505W, so go with 600 W to be safe 750W i think i an overkill -__-

Thanks, but with regards to this, wouldn't the needed wattage of computer parts not then continually to decrease over the years as apposed to rise.

My logic for this is with the ATI 2900 XT card which is 90nm and uses 200W.

The ATI 3850 card is much better than the 2900 but is only 55nm thus meaning it uses only 95W.

In a year or two's time wont they have 45nm and then 25nm.

And wouldn't this mean premium cards would use even less than the 95W that this 55nm card is now using. (Or have I misunderstood this process?).

Just to throw my 2 cents worth in here, I would recommend NOTHING LESS than an Antec Trio 650. That will push this rig fine. If you plan on any upgrades in the future (fantastic video cards, etc), then you certainly do need to consider a 700 or 750 watt power supply made by a major company.
