[SOLVED] Computer won't post

I have 1gb (2 x 512) Ultra memory installed on my system. I had 2gb but a stick went bad and so I removed two to stay in dual channel. Well, I ordered another 1gb (2 x 512) of Crucial memory. I installed the memory and started up it won't post. I figured the two syicks weren't compatible, so I took the Crucial out and restarted. It still won't post. I get one long beep followed by one short and then it keeps repeating a long beep. Any ideas why it won't post now. I know I probably should have bought Ultra again but it looked like Crucial would be better and that's what NewEgg's memory configurator selected. Should I start by clearing the cmos? Everything powers up but it won't post.

Re: Computer won't post

I don't remember off hand. I will check the psu when I get home from work. I was considering replacing that too, but I don't think that's the problem...yet!

Re: Computer won't post

Feel pretty stupid. I wasn't getting one of the sticks seated all the way apparently. It's booting now, but if I try to shut down Windows, it freezes during shutdown now. I think I'm going to have to wipe the drive and reinstall.

Is your device manager free of any yellow alerts?

The epower 450 is substandard, consider a quality supply.

Re: Computer won't post

I'm using AVG. I also just added a HannsG 19" lcd and hooked it up using the dvi, don't know if that could cause problems? I am probably going to upgrade the psu and was thinking of this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817256012 though I'd like to go modular.

I'm at work right now and will have to check device manager when I get home. I don't remember any yellow flags. Thanks for the help.

Re: Computer won't post

when inserting ram sticks don't rely on the clips clicking over to signify it is seated
that's not always true

Re: Computer won't post

Okay no problems in device manager. I tried system restore and it still hangs at shutdown. Every once in a while it hangs at startup after I enter my password. Any ideas? I have all four memory sticks in now, but it was still doing the same thing with just the Ultra after I first removed the Crucial memory.

Re: Computer won't post

I will try that later when I get home. I may have found the culprit. I had HP software loaded for a printer that was no longer connected to the computer. I didn't have any active printers selected so I didn't think anything of it. I uninstalled that software and the computer has shut down every time since.

Hey speedster, what about this power supply?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817703005

I"m going to be upgrading to a BFG 7600GT. I might do SLi down the road but for now just one card.

Wow, and that Cooler Master right next to it looks like a sweet deal. That one is also mentioned in the Power Supply Selection thread. $50 after rebate!
