Question Request advice on choice of new Power Supply

Have:

Compaq Presario SR5030NX Desktop PC
Windows Vista Home Basic
Integrated graphics
250 Watt Power Supply

1. Want new video card
2. Have found one that needs 300 W
3. Have been advised to get bigger power supply
4. Have been advised to see if current PS is "proprietary" to Compaq
5. Do not know what that means!
6. Would appreciate brief education on "proprietary" & how to choose a power supply that will work (out of the box) with my PC

Re: Request advice on choice of new Power Supply

Thanks for the suggestion but (curiousity) would like to be educated re what "proprietary" means in context to a power supply & whether or not I have to be concerned about it with my PC.

Re: Request advice on choice of new Power Supply

check the mesurements of the supply width and height and compare it to a standard atx supply you will probably find it is smaller and a normal atx will not fit in the case
