Boot up issue - power supply??

Hi - I have a desktop PC running XP.

During boot up (after being off overnight or longer) will get about half way through - then screen would go blank - HD light would stay solid - PC frozen. Have to hard re-boot. 2nd re-boot, gets a little further along then freezes. 3rd reboot, gets into Windows then locks. 4th reboot, boots all the way through and stays on.

This started about three months ago - has prgressively gotten worse - meaning that it used to take maybe two tries to get a full boot.

Does this sound like a power supply issue? Motherboard issue?

Re: Boot up issue - power supply??

Please list your specs including motherboard, CPU, video card, the brand name and wattage of your power supply. Also, look on the side of the power supply and see what the amps are for the +12v rail.

Do download and run SensorviewPro and list the voltages and the temperatures. Then, put the computer under stress and run it again so we can see the temperatures under stress.

Re: Boot up issue - power supply??

What video card do you have?

I can tell you that e-machines are notorious for having very weak power supplies and 13amps on the +12 rail (even if the power supply were new) is so small that I suspect you need a newer brand name power supply.

My best guess is you will need a new power supply to run that rig.

Re: Boot up issue - power supply??

I'm not sure how to find out what video card we have...

Can I put a power supply in that is larger than 250W? The smallest they have at Best Buy is 340w. Also - do you know - will any ATX power supply fit in the case?

Thanks for your expertise!
