RAM upgrade 1 or 2 GB?

A friend of mine bought a Compaq Presario 6545dk a couple of years back. Now he would like to upgrade the RAM (it only came with 512 MB). Now the issue is this - according to the specs for the motherboard found online it should be able to use 2 GB PC-2100 RAM. However according to the various memory configurators it has a max of 1 GB. The motherboard is supposedly an AM37 (Salsa) with VIA KM266 chipset.

Question is what can it actually use?

2x 1GB sticks would probably work. You could add another 1GB stick and have 1.5GB.

What do you mean by "various memory configurators?"

I can guarantee you that it's 2Gb.

Don't hold me to this but I'm picking they're stating the maximum memory per slot.

That chipset is fine with 1GB sticks, so if it can only handle up to 512MB then that's a limitation Compaq have introduced, but I doubt it.

A nice computer shop might let you exchange a 1GB stick with a 512MB if it didn't work and you checked before hand.
