Hi and welcome to TSF.

Have you tried leaving one of the old sticks in slot 1 and adding the new stick in slot 2.

When i installed extra memory on my PC, the new ram would not work on its own but it works fine with the old stick left in. Don't know why.

Thanks for the welcome.
It still didn't work, I even tried to put the old memory sticks back and removed the new one but the same problem, it won't boot
old memory sticks: 2 x 256mb PC-3200 DDR2
new memory stick: 1 x 2gb PC-5300 DDR2
Did I break my PC because they're not the same?

The specs for your PC say that you should install matched pairs to a maximum of 1gb per slot.
