unexpected shutdowns
Hi, One day I was using my computer when I suddenly heard a loud snapping sound and the power went out. Knowing that the power supply could have damaged other components of my system, I replaced the power supply crossed my fingers and turned the power back on. Everything seemed to be OK at first. Then I got an error and when I sent the error report to Microsoft, the response was that the report was corrupt, that this was rare and indicated major problems. I have gotten other errors as well, the latest one is an IE script error. My main concern is that now by computer unexpectedly shuts down without warning, and without any error messages until the last two times. which gave me the active desktop error message. I press the button to restore my active desktop and get the IE script error message on line 65, char 1, error: object doesn't support this action, code 0. and do I want to continue running scripts on this page? I press the yes button which does nothing.
I went into the desktop properties page and the desktop graphic I was using is missing even though it is on the list. I have backed up my entire drive. I hope. Not sure what the proplem is. Can anyone help? Thanks Jeanette. |

Re: unexpected shutdowns
You might try running scandisk on the harddrive, then defragging.
The zap may have corrupted something on the harddrive. You may also try going to maker of harddrive and downloading a diagnostic utility to check out the drive. If none of these things work you could try a repair install of xp. Sounds to me like a operating system corruption of some kind or a harddrive issue. Hard to say, but that is where I would start.

Re: unexpected shutdowns
Thank you for your help. I performed chkdsk, but got a "One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency" messages. I defragged the drive and downloaded the diagnostic application for the hard drive. The drive passed the diagnostic from the manufacturer. The shutdown problem still remained. I then changed some settings with the video card and so far the problem seems to be solved.
