power supply

hello. so my girlfriends computer is just your standard hp, and lately we've been having some power outages in our town. so this caused her Bestec ATX-1523D power supply to stop working. When you plug it in the light on the back glows very dimmely and the computer wont turn on. so I figured that I could just rip the power supply out of an old comp i had sitting around. well that sort of worked. the computer powered on and everything. but the monitor just stayed black? So should I just go out and buy another Bestec?

Re: power supply

Were the power outages accompanied with surges? A powerful surge could of di out the power supply and possibly other components like the video card. Was here computer protected with a surge suppressor?

Re: power supply

welcome
clear the cmos first
did you plug in all power leeds to the board?
if you have a video card, remove it, make sure it doesnt look burnt on the contacts.
check the caps on the motherboard closely for any bulged or leaking units.

lastly, does the cpu fan spin when you first turn it on?

Re: power supply

no her computer is not protected by a surge surpressor. although shes thinking about getting one now lol. and as for the power outages, as far as i know they were not followed by any surges. no she doesn't have a video card. her monitor jus goes straight into the mother board and yes the cpu fans spins and the hd starts up. but on startup, I never hear any beeps. which is unusual.

Re: power supply

Bestec is a horrible quality of PSU

I would try to replace the unit with a better quality one and more wattage too

Like the antec trio rail 430 watt the can be found at Best Buy / Comp USA / Staples

Re: power supply

I do have another power supply. I'm not looking for top quality stuff here. I just want to get it working without having to take it in to a computer shop.

Re: power supply

What is the model number of her HP, and what is the make, model, and wattage of the PSU you installed?

Re: power supply

well then / we can reach into the bag of tricks alittle deeper

go to mwave.com / click on refurbished / case and power supplies

get the antec earth watts 430 watt for under $30.00

I have bought hordes of parts from the refurb catagory / they have all come in a new retail box

dont waste your time in that group with anything other than the earthwatts or trio rails >>>> they have alot of paper weights in there for sale too :(

Re: power supply

nice catch Mattlock Mattlock sure makes a great cup of coffee that wakes me up EVERY time

yeah Micro ATX power supplies are horribly expensive and very limited in ability !

I usually get my cumstomers into a new case and power supply rather than pay the insane prices for a quality M-ATX power supply
