Ram upgrade help

i got an email from a friend a couple days ago about some new computer he got. I looked into it a bit but we're still trying to figure out what the problem is.

its got the following configuration:
Processor:Intel core duo e6700
Motherboard:ASUS commando
videocard: ATI x1900 XTX
RAM: 2 1gb sticks of OCZ PC6400 for a total of 2 GBs of physical memory
Harddrive: 2 500GB Maxtor Sata2
OS: Vista Ultimate

his email says " okay the computer is sweet, but i really wanted to be a ble to game and decode video at the same time, and sometimes listen to music. So i decided to add more ram. I got 2 sticks of 1 GB of the same kind of ram. when i boot up the RAM seems like its there, but when i go into task manager, theres only 3 GB of Memory.... so then i thought, I'd just reinstall vista because maybe its my OS. so i start installation and it stops and i get an error that is something like this: STOP oxoooooooA- IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL . Now i can't even reinstall vista!"

so i know for a fact the problem isn't with the slots for the ram and the problem isn't with the ram itself.

I was thinking it might be because the OS could be a 32bit and just can't read that much ram but im not quite sure yet.

Any insight?

Re: Ram upgrade help

This is a bit mixed up:

"RAM: 2 1gb sticks of OCZ PC6400 for a total of 2 GBs of physical memory"

"but when i go into task manager, theres only 3 GB of Memory"

What is he trying to say? How much RAM does he actually have?

Re: Ram upgrade help

OK, the problem is because he has a 32bit OS which will only recognize a little over 3gb.

I have know idea what that error is about? Can he not install the OS?

Mikey.

Re: Ram upgrade help

The error is most likely due to having 4 gigs of ram, (IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL...is normally a memory problem), remove two and all should be well, Vista works excellent on 2 gigs and there is no need for additional memory unless you upgrade to a 64bit OS. As it has been stated any 32bit OS will only reccognize 3.25-3.5 gigs, also trying to run 4X1gig modules is going to require more than the stock ddr ref voltage (2.1V)
