Why is the max 2gb on one site and 4 on another

I own an e1405 Dell inspiron and according to http://support.dell.com/support/edoc....htm#wp1054547
the dell manual, it says that every module supports a min of 256 but a max of 2 gbs. The maximum memory allowed is 2 gbs but the site on crucial http://www.crucial.com/store/listpar...l=Dell&cat=RAM
claims that it can go up to 4gbs.

I'm sure it safer to go with the 2x1gb for a total of 2 gigs, but is it possible to go beyond 2gbs?

The Dell statement likely just means they have only tested it with 2 Gig . . Since 32 bit Operating systems cannot access 4 Gig, they probably did not bother to test it

My view is they did not offer it because people would complain about the no proformance gain
