Can I buy high-performance memory?
I'm looking to upgrade the RAM in my cpu. Each time I run a memory configurator I get advised to buy the value version of the RAM (true for ocz, corsair, etc.). What is it about my system that makes this so?
I have a Gateway 838GM with all of the default hardware and settings (no upgrades yet): http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/5389/5389sp3.shtml I did buy Corsair's TWINX memory awhile back, but returned it because I couldn't get it up and running. I could boot up with no problem, but as soon as I tried running a program that required more graphics power (I think I tested it on GTA3), the computer would hang and I'd be forced to reboot. Is there anything I can do short of replacing the motherboard to get high-performance memory to work? Sorry for my ineptitude. I am admittedly a noob, but I'm working hard at educating myself. Thanks. |

Re: Can I buy high-performance memory?
Hello & Welcome to TSF
![]() Sorry for my ineptitude. I am admittedly a noob, but I'm working hard at educating myself first off I would like to say, we all start learning from the beginning! no short cuts, so therefore no need for "sorry for ineptitude" >>>>> we are all here to help YOU & now on to your question I think the reason why you get getting listing results for "value" ram is becasue most all manufactured PC's cant overclock, and thats what the whole purpose of high performance memory is all about. by seeing as the big OEM builders have opted not to include settings that will allow you to "tweak" your system and memory settings, its really pointless to buy high performance ram. if you want to anyway, we can try to give you some models that will suit your needs just holler and let us know how we may help you best regards' joe

Re: Can I buy high-performance memory?
That makes sense. I didn't realize that high-performance memory is specifically for overclocking, nor that manufactured PCs can't overclock. I'll definitely enlist your help if/when I decide to build my own machine. Thanks for the info, I appreciate it!
