Mistake Power supply issue with new system?

I've just installed a new Gigabyte (GA-M61P-S3) motherboard, AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ processor, 500W Rosewill PSU, and 2gb DDR2 800mhz RAM, but I can't get it to boot, post, beep, or anything.

The strange thing is that the processor and PSU fans will stay powered on when I have the 20+4 connector plugged in, but I only get a short power up (less than 1 second of fans and lights) when I have the 4-pin ATX 12v processor power plugged in.

I've stripped it down to just these components and have even removed the mobo from the case to be sure it's not shorting. I've searched endlessly, to no avail, and I'm throwing my arms up in frustration. Any thoughts?

Re: Power supply issue with new system?

Hi,

First of all - unplug the computer from the wall outlet.
Clear CMOS.
I assume you've already done this, but check all the cables and connections again.
Do you have a video card installed?

Re: Power supply issue with new system?

I've cleared the CMOS, but nothing changed. Currently I'm using the on-board video to take another component out of the equation. I can get the fans to spin, etc., without the 12v 4-pin plugged in, but when it is in, i get a half second of power to nothing. I've swapped the RAM and tried an older PSU. I'm thinking the mobo is DOA, but I guess it could also be the CPU. Anyway to tell? Or any other thoughts? Thanks for the help!

Re: Power supply issue with new system?

Did you apply thermal paste between the CPU and its heatsink? The size of a grain of rice is the right amount.
Are you sure the CPU fan is connected correctly to the motherboard?
Try a bench test (link for instructions in my signature).

Re: Power supply issue with new system?

Yep, the AMD processor came with heat paste already applied to the heat sink. The fan is connected and will remain on when I don't have the ATX 12v 4-pin plugged in. I have attempted all of this outside of the case (as indicated in your bench test link) but still nothing. I think that something is DOA, but I can't tell if it's the mobo or CPU. This is a newer chip set then my old system so I can't test either of them independently. Thanks again for your time. Any other thoughts?

Is the RAM compatible? http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/FileList/...ga-m61p-s3.pdf
Any beeps if you start the computer without RAM or CPU?

Re: Power supply issue with new system?

There are no beeps when I start without the RAM or CPU. The power won't stay on with the 4-pin plugged in, even without the CPU installed. Does this mean that it's a bad mobo? Should I send the CPU back as well?

Re: Power supply issue with new system?

If you bought them as a combo - send both back. If not - RMA the motherboard.

Re: Power supply issue with new system?

It was a combo deal, so I guess they're both going back. :-(
Thanks a ton for your help! Guess I gotta wait and start over.

Re: Power supply issue with new system?

It sounds like a bad mobo (if you're sure the power supplies you've tried are OK).
Please keep us updated.
