Quick RAM Question

I just recently purchased a DELL DESKTOP Optiplex gx270 and it has 2 banks of 2 slots each (4 slots total). I know that each bank must withhold the same amount of ram in order to function correctly but i am not sure if both of the banks MUST also be the same. Currently there are 4x256mb installed and i wanted to purchase 2x1gb and put it in one bank and leave the other with 2x256mb. Will this work? my computer is max 4gb so that it is not an issue on being able to accept 2x1gb. Just curious if you have to match the banks? or can i use 2x256 in one bank and 2x1gb in the other? Thanks!
