Memory upgrade headache

Hello,this is my first post and hope you can help.Currently running on 256MB(DDR PC2300 133mhz) and after using crucials compatability scan I purchased 1GB(DDR PC3200 400mhz).PC wouldn't even start with them both installed,so installed just the 1GB.PC would only start in safemode,and when eventually booted,showed only 24MB of ram.I use a (Micro star)MS 6526G,which has two slots,and a max of 2048MB.I did read up on this procedure and thought it to be within my capabilities(but obviously not!).Any advice would be gladly appreciated.

try a cmos reset
