What sort of ram is this?
Hi, I have bought a stick of ram of an Ebay shop. When the stick arrived it wouldn't run in either of my machines as they require low density ram. The stick is one sided, 1 gig, Pc3200, 400 mhz, 184 pin. Each chip reads 256 x 4 . The manufacturer is "AT". I have been reading in the forums and haven't come across 256 x 4 .

Re: What sort of ram is this?
Have you tried the memory by itself, without any other modules installed....you may have to clear the cmos as well. ( if your are not familiar with the settings in your bios, please write them all down before doing anything as you will need to redo any custom or nessessary settings afterwards, I also reccomend that you back up any important data beforehand as well) Also when you post next, please list your system specs to help us figure out if this is an incompatability issue, settings issue or simply a bad memory module.

Re: What sort of ram is this?
Hi, I have tried it by itself, in fact I have tried it in my second machine with the same result. I had already tried with the cmos cleared. Just a bit of inof I have 25 yrs plus in computers so I know most of the tricks . I just have never come across ram with markings of 256x4 on the chip. I know it's high density, I thought maybe it was something that ran on servers?

Re: What sort of ram is this?
You're correct, I believe its registered eec ram, usually found in servers, though many mainstream mobo's will support it, many will no,t and I don't think you can mix eec registered ram with non eec/non reg ram, check your mobo manual for compatability
