Strange Power Supply Problem

Ive just built a new computer using the power supply from my old computer. Ever since i first booted the new one up, it's been making a high pitched/buzzing kind of noise. I've plugged it back in to my old one and seen if it would still do the same and it's silent. The power supply is a Hiper 580W Type-R Modular PSU SLI/CrossFire Certified, could this be happening because its not powerful enough for my new system?

Here's the specs:
Abit AB9 Quad GT
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
Corsair 2GB Kit DDR2 800mhz XMS2 Dominator
ATI X1900XTX 512MB
2 Hard Drives
1 DVD Drive

Re: Strange Power Supply Problem

ohhhhhh yeah

thats not near enough power for your new rig, especially with a quad core!

look for a Thermaltake 750 watt toughpower PSU (only get the toughpower)

another great choice is the Enermax Infiniti 720

or Silverstone 750 watt

Re: Strange Power Supply Problem

it really depends on how the psu eventually reacts to the overload

sometimes they just begin random shutdowns

other times they will blow and kill your motherboard, hard drives or ram sticks

I have seen crappy PSU's kill cpu's too

Re: Strange Power Supply Problem

Frankly, using it with a weak power supply is not IMHO worth the risk. That power supply is crying because it is peddling the power bicycle so fast, but it simply can not keep up. Something has to give. It can be as stated by linderman, one of many things that will eventually give up. It may run two weeks, two days, two hours, or two minutes, but eventually, it will give up the ghost and possibly take something or several items with it. I need to mention that ram can be one of the main components that can die due to lack of power.

If this were mine, I would replace that before you use it to protect your investment of the other components.

Re: Strange Power Supply Problem

So you're 100% sure it's not powerful enough? and that noise could only be happening because its struggling to keep up? I didn't think it was a weak psu, it was fine before, and the only thing that has really changed with this computer is the processor.. this is the pc i was using it with before:

DFI Lanparty UT RDX200 CF-DR
AMD 3800 X 2 Dual Core
Corsair 1GB
ATI X1900XTX 512mb

And apparently it can handle another graphics card since it supports crossfire.

thanks for the help so far.

Re: Strange Power Supply Problem

the quad 6600 draws twice the power of the 3800

I have seen several reviews where the hiper 580 watt tripped its overload protection at 366 watts!!

Re: Strange Power Supply Problem

I know for sure the Enermax infiniti 720 watt gets an A+ grade

and I believe the quattro 850 is also doing very well

I am not sure about the Hiper >>>>> I have read the newer hipers are built better but I have no idea how much better

I would pick the infiniti 720 myself
