Re: I only get a green light...

Hi, welcome to TSF

Sounds like a faulty power switch or a bad power supply.
Open the case and find the cables connecting the power switch to the motherboard. Disconnect the power switch connector from the motherboard (take a note to remember how it was mounted) - then short the two pins that the switch was connected to for a split second.
If that helps you, of course, need a new power switch.
If not - I think it's a bad PSU.

Re: I only get a green light...

the powersupply uses a foxconn ribon, im not sure on how to put them together, the computer is an dell optiplex 260... if that helps.... theres is a foxconn ribon connecting the motherboard to a chip that has a headphone jack, two usb ports, then from that chip there is another foxconn ribon that connect to the the chip that contains the 2 LED lights, and the power button

Re: I only get a green light...

Is it an Optiplex GX260?
If so the switch is connected directly to the PSU. To be honest I don't know how it's hooked up. There could be high voltage to the switch - do not try to short the switch.
Please post back with the exact Dell model.

Re: I only get a green light...

I've had a look at the online manual and I'm still not sure if there's high voltage through the switch. So, unless you can measure the voltage - stay away from the switch.
Try a simple BIOS reset.

Re: I only get a green light...

To reset BIOS:
Unplug the computer from the wall socket.
Remove the (coin-like) battery from the motherboard.
Put the battery back in after 30 minutes.
Start the computer.

Re: I only get a green light...

ok, update, i have taken the power box and ran another computer with it, and i have taken another computers power box and installed it, and the same problem occures. I have taken the 2nd chip containing the switch and wired it to an old computer, and it would turn the computer on and off, i am wondering if the first chip containing the USB and Head Phone jack is damaged, or whats going on.

Re: I only get a green light...

Unplug the ribbon cable that runs from the MB to the the front side USB board, and look at the MB next to the front panel header pins. (where the ribbon cable was connected) You should see PWR switch, or PW+/PW- along with HDD led, pwr led, etc. Take a small screw driver and touch the pins labeled pwr switch. (You only need to touch them briefly)

If the system starts then the power switch or the smaller board that the ribbon cable connects to is bad. If you still don't see any signs of life it's highly likely that the motherboard is gone.

To further test the motherboard, remove everything except the CPU heatsink and fan then jump the pwr switch pins again. If the fans still don't spin and you still don't hear any beeps, then your down to power supply or motherboard. Since you've already confirmed that the PSU works then that only leaves the MB.

Post back with your results, questions , or concerns.

BTW, there is no high voltage running through the ribbon cables.

Not true. I've seen MB's that required several hours at least before the CMOS would forget after the battery was removed. Many of them have a filter cap across the memory, and the few microamps required to maintain the memory takes a while to discharge the cap.

Things are not always as simple as they seem.
