[resolved]Do I really need more memory?

Right now I have a pair of 256's and a pair of 512's in my computer for 1.5 gig's of memory. Right now sitting idle task manager saysim using about 425 MB of page file (RAM?), and I disabled virtual memory. Should i swap the 256 so i have quad 512's, or go with a pair of 1's so i have 3 gigs? Or stay where i am? I'm not sure how much PF i use while gaming.

Hi,

Well if you are gaming, alot of games now need between 512mb to 1.5GB but as your are triple booting and what your spec is, I would get about a 2GB at the highest speed you Motherboard will let you.

You will notice a difference as well in its speed, both with normal running your computer and with your games.

So get a pair of 1's to put me at 3 GB total, or a pair of 512's to put me at 2 total? my computer has PC3200 @ 400MHz right now.

Okay, Go for the 3GB, If you have it use it. why not.

I dont think you will have any problems with compatibility issues so thats ok.

well like i said, for argument reasons i run at 512 idle. I'm not sure what i run while gaming, GTR2's box says recomended 1 GB, so i'm already over that, on my triple boot windows XP pro i run bare bones (it's just there to be there if i need to boot up real quick without waiting for stuff to load) and linux is just ubuntu with a few extra's on it, nothing intense. So i'm just trying to figure out what i should do.

right now i'm idling at 392 MB, i went ahead and opened GTR, and at the root menu it said 500 MB. I can't actually play until the new heatsink gets put on, so that'll be around the 23rd. After that i'll have a PF reading during actual game play.

ok, solved. I just read linderman's thread, since i'm at 1.5 and nobody really knows where XP cuts off at as far as memory amount, and since it's only 400 MHz sticks, i'mm gonna stay where i am. When I get a new mobo, then i'll get a new array of memory.
