Question Worried about my PSU...

Hey guys, well heres the thing, i recently upgraded to PCI-E, an AM2 Motherboard, SLI capable.

The Power connector to the motherboard is ATX 2.0 (if im right there) Which is a 24pin connector.

I have a fairly old Dabs Value 550Watter Power supply with the older 20pin connector.
I have plugged all the neccessary power cables in, and it seems to boot fine just using a 20pin connector.

I was wondering if theres any chance i'm doing damage to my motherboard or PC by not having a 24pin connection.

The only think i notice is that the PSU hisses sometimes when under load, but this is only normally when the ambient temperature in room is quite high, seeing as we're in summer now.
I'm planning on upgrading the PSU soon anyway, i was just basically wondering if its safe to use this 20pin connector with the 24pin board?.

Re: Worried about my PSU...

Um well you can get a connector that takes the 20 pin and turns it in to a 24 but i dont remember were i heard this but your motherboard apparrantely can take the 20 pin connector even if it is 24 if i remember but i would just reccomend getting new one seeing as more stuff these days are demanding more wattage and power

Re: Worried about my PSU...

it really depends on the video card you choose

the extra four pins on the 20 plus four connector feed the power to the pci express video card slot on the motherboard

if you have a video card thats hungry and needs a pci express plug also, then chances are you are headed for trouble

I would not mess around and drag my feet with a PSU that makes any noise / other than the common smooth runnign cooling fan noise

I would look at the Antec Trio Power 65o watt they can be had for $99.00 and under; depending on how much you want to squeeze the lemon

I have seen antec trio 650 refurb units for $73.00 ????? and TT toughpower 750's for $99.00

they carry a 15 day warranty

Re: Worried about my PSU...

Hmnn yeh i'm definetly getting a new one now, My PC decided to just turn off in a C&C3 game,
the graphics card i have is a PCI-E Fatal1ty 7600GT, the passively cooled one, so i can imagine it sucks a fair bit of power.
I'm avoiding playing games atm, until i have my new PSU, the one I was thinking of was:
http://www.tekheads.co.uk/s/product?product=605901

I've heard good things about it, and its relatively cheap for what looks like a stable PSU

Re: Worried about my PSU...

The Hiper has had plenty of its share of troubles, I have heard they have improved the quality of the Hiper Type R units

but I would advise you get the 580 watt version

the Hipers dont put out near the amount of wattage they are labeled for, but the 580 should be plenty for you

however if the Hiper Type-R 580 watt is anywhere near the cost of the Antec Trio Power 650 watt, then stick with the Antec by FAR !!

Re: Worried about my PSU...

Joseph, ewiz has the 650 trio for $110 shipped. Seems as if the power supply market fluctuates like the stock market.

Re: Worried about my PSU...

I am somewhat shocked Speedy the Antec Trio is still the market "deal" in my opinion >>>>> I really thought it would have been knocked off by now

for the price tag, quality and the power it can "really" deliver the TRIO 650 watt is the real deal

not saying the TRIO is anything of perfection, but to obtain a model thats definetly better requires $30.00 to $40.00 more dollars into the pot. thats what makes the TRIO 650 a deal @ it's $100.00 / $115.00 ish pricetag

Re: Worried about my PSU...

The only good Thermaltake PSU's I have seen are the Toughpower series; avoid the pure power versions like the plague.

yes; the unit you linked is an excellent choice >>>>> enjoy
