Can I under clock RAM ?

I have an ECS RS482-M motherboard. According to specification, it supports DDR266/333/400. My firend has a spare PC2-5300 DIMM DDR2-667. I was wondering if I can use it on the motherboard with the understanding that I will only get DDR2-400 speed.

Re: Can I under clock RAM ?

Well the bad news is the PC2-5300 DIMM DDR2-667 will not work in your machine. Your motherboard will only support DDR memory and not DDR2 memory.

Re: Can I under clock RAM ?

Correct, it physically won't fit into the slot. So don't try.

Some more info. RAM that runs faster than the memory bus on a motherboard will automatically clock down to the speed of the memory bus. So, if your board takes only DDR2-533 MHz RAM or slower and you put in a stick of DDR2-667 MHz RAM, it will only run at 533 MHz.
