ahoy hoy , yes another ram question

Hello

Ive recently bought another 512mb ram stick so i now have two of them, they are seperate make but they are both in diffrent color slots. After a lifetime of fiddeling with the stick to get it in the right spot, the computer actually booted up. But to my horror windows tells me ive still only got 512mb of ram. My mobo is capable of supporting it. Any advice?

Probably a voltage thing. Ram can be very picky as to where and what
its sitting beside and plugged into. Look in bios for a flexibility option.
That will allow more variations of ram configs. But if its blue screening
and when it finally boots you are only seeing half, that is not a good
sign. Good luck with that.

Welcome to TSF,

Try re-seating Ram, make sure its correctly fitted and fully secured. Does your system do a memory test when it first starts up if so, is it detected? If your motherboard has 4 slots each with a color code, try seating them in the same color for dual channel support. You can also reset the bios, or reset the jumper on the mainboard see if that makes any difference to windows detecting it.

On another note, try running the machine with just the new 512 stick and see if Windows detects that, make sure you wear an anti-static wristband when handling the Ram.

Re: ahoy hoy , yes another ram question

Make sure the RAM slots are all DDR. Some motherboards have 2 DRR slots and 2 DDR2 slots.. You stated that only one of the RAM can fit in 2 out of the 4 slots, you may have a DDR2 RAM. You are unable to run a pc with 1 DDR stick and 1 DDR2 stick. The motherboard chooses which RAM to run at bootup.

Also i have Dual Channel but my RAM slots are all the same color

sothatshow is correct about the placement of the modules. Today, I put a doubleside 256MB DDR module in DIMM1 and switched the singlesided 256MB DDR Module to DIMM2. I could only see a grand total of 256MB in the bios. Changing it back got it back to 512MB. Learned that one the hard way!
