Do I need a new PSU?
Hey i just bought a GeForce 7600 GS and it says i need 350W PSU, I've only got 330W, I run 1gb + 512mb RAM, 2 hardrives, 1 Disk drive.
Do i need to upgrade or will i be ok, also how will i know if i don't have enough power? |

Well assuming if it was OK it is going to be pushing your current PSU to it's limit, and as it's like a persons heart it will eventually breakdown, so basically you may get away with it for a while but you are definitely better off getting a more powerful PSU, it will also put you in good stead for any future upgrades if you get the best you can afford now, you should be able to get a nice affordable 700w unit these days, check the link in my sig for a power calc to get an idea about you power requirements and add 30% to the result, but even if it says 500w or something I would still get the most powerful one you can afford because as I said it will stand you in readiness when your ready to upgrade the whole PC in the future.

Re: Do I need a new PSU?
Computers with a not powerfull enough PSU often begin to shutdown unexpectedly.
Though your computer might seem to work fine for usual tasks, consumption increase could also have an impact on the voltages if your PSU is on the edge. On a long term, that could damage your components. Asus and Abit usually provide a voltage monitoring software on their driver cd, and there are other softwares around for other motherboards. In your case, I'd suggest upgrading to a better PSU. Check what the PSU calcultator says about your requirements (it's recommendend to add 30% to the results) edit : I was outrunned... doubly ![]() Last edited by justpassingby : 03-21-2007 at 06:02 AM. |
