G'Day zellerscrossing, and Welcome to TSF!

This is a very broad question; so in order to answer it properly, we will need to have some more information...such as,
Your full system specs, giving us your Motherboard Make and Model, the type of RAM that you have installed (the 1Gb Stick) and also the type of RAM that you have just taken out (the 512Mb Stick/s), as there might be an incompatability problem with it.

Post back and we'll see what we can do.

Re: Ram causing problems's? help please

i was able to get onto this page long enough to submit the system specs. If my other messages are short, it's cause I'm using my nintendo Wii. Here is the site showing the compatability stuff from crucial.com. Both Ram sticks are DDR PC3200. 512 is still in there. my IE is probably going to crash, so i'm going to cut this short. ps: system doesn't crash when idle, only when I run a program. thanks for everything guys!

You may need to up the ddr ref voltage up a notch to 2.7V or 2.75V in the bios....also check that the timings are not to agressive....you should be able to manually adjust the timings to 3-3-3-6 or 3-4-4-8 depending on what the memory modules support

Also
Dave T asked about your power supply info, age-make-model

Remove the added ram and clear the cmos, see if the crashing stops.

If it comes down to having to do this, I will need step by step instructions. I know some about computers, but I'm no god by anymeans. Thanks for the help though guys.

I went ahead and took out the new 1gig stick just to see if my comp still ran fine without it and sure enough, here I am, fine and dandy. To Dave T. I dont know the age, unless you are actually refering to how long ago I bought it (about 2 years) make is: HIGH POWER (i think), model is: APC-420-102 DF.

OK, fixed the problem....hopefully. It's gotta be fixed since both RAM is in and I'm able to type this! I switched the 1G into the primary slot, put 512 in the other slot. Now I know!

Thanks guys for everything, you will see me more on this forum!
