Memory Timings Too Tight...
Ok, before you tell me to search the forum, allow me to explain.....
First of all, here's my hardware specifications: MB-MSI 865PE Neo 2 P Platinum Edition with Bios version 3.A Video card-BFG Geforce 6800 GS OC AGP Sound Card-Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 Memory-Crucial Ballistix PC4000 512x2 (1 gig) HD-Western Digital WD2500JS SATAII 1 48X Cdrom 1 Plextor DVDRW/CDRW 2 120mm Case fans, 1 dual-fan hard drive cooler PSU-Ultra Xfinitiy 600W Ok, here's the deal.. I just upgraded the PSU from a Coolermaster eXtreme Power 430W, the hard drive to a WD2500JS SATA from a WD800 IDE, and a fresh install of Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 2.. I also upgraded the bios on the mainboard from version 3.7 to 3.A since that's the only version that supports drives larger than 136 gigs.. The system has been running fine for several days, when all of the sudden, the screen started to blank out.. No blue screen.. Just blanking out.. When pressing the reset button, it won't come back unless I actually shut it down by switching off the power supply.. So, I restart it , and when it posts, it says that my memory timings are too tight.. I have the bios set up so the timings are negotiated by SPD (the bios picks what the timings should be).. The timings were 2-3-3-8, I think.. Damn, I'm not sure.. Anyhow, does this have to do with my upgrades???? This issue NEVER came up before even when I overclocked to 3.6ghz (900mhz fsb).. I occasionally over clock the video card from the stock 370mhz/1000mhz to 400mhz1500mhz and have never run into issues with that either.. I even went a far as running the Windows memory diagnostic (bootable 3.5 floppy) and found no issues after the extensive testing, however, it did "blank screen" again about 3/4 of the way through the extensive memory test.. I'm at a loss.. I have loosened up the timings, however, I don't know much about memory timings, but I have read up on them recently, so, I'm getting there.. Anyhow, help? |

Re: Memory Timings Too Tight...
Hi,
Try clearing the CMOS and see if that fixes it. http://www.techsupportforum.com/hard...ings-cmos.html Your timings should be around 3-4-4-8. If they are not stable there, try each stick of RAM individually.

Re: Memory Timings Too Tight...
Ok, when I try to go to the link you posted for clearing the cmos, it says I don't have permission to access the part of the website....?? What do I need to do?
If I remember correctly, I can take out the battery for a few minutes or use the clear cmos jumper, yes? Last edited by Jerdahn : 03-17-2007 at 12:11 PM. |

Re: Memory Timings Too Tight...
Switch off the power supply unit or pull off the power cord. There is a CMOS jumper near the battery. Change the jumper position from default 1-2 to 2-3 for one minute to discharge the CMOS data, check your motherboard for the correct pin numbers, and then put it back to default 1-2. Switch on the power supply unit or pull in the power cord. Press the power-on button to boot up system. If it works, hit "Del" key to enter the BIOS setup page to do correct settings.
Or pull the battery out for 15 to 20 minutes after you unplug the machine and de-static yourself before entering. |

Speedster gave two methods to clear the CMOS, however, sometimes it is necessary to do both, so I would do that.

Re: Memory Timings Too Tight...
what are the models of your ram modules and they are DDR 400 / PC3200 correct ??
if yes, then try bumping up your vdimm (memory voltage) voltage to 2.75
