PSU recommendations?

Ok, I need to find a power suppply to go along with my Antec nine-hundred (900)... but I dont have any idea where to start...

Heres what the PSU is gonna need to power...

-Mobo (MSI K8N Neo-4)
-Dual core CPU @ 2.4 Ghz (AMD)
-DVD-R 16x drive
-Nvidia 7950GT 512MB (w/ the power connector)
-3 120mm fans
-1 200mm fan
-and the 7200RPm hard drive

Also, when looking at suggestions keep in mind that the power supply is mounted on the BOTTOM of my new Antec case... and I THINK my mobo has one on the top (MSI K8N Neo-4)

I already tried the power calculator but it gives me a low number like 400W, and from what seems like common sense and other siggestion from friends... seems like I would need more than that?

Also, leave a little extra watttage in there for upgrades... for I might be upgrading video cards soon, possibly 8800.

Any help would be great! THANK YOU!

Re: PSU recommendations?

if you are planning a 8800 look at 750w psu
i prefer the single rail over the multiple rails and would go for this one

others

Re: PSU recommendations?

I would go for this: http://www.eastluna.com/hardware/details.php?id=2586

Silverstone Olympia 750W $149, proved and tested good and is the same as the Decathlon 750W dai suggested but has been reviewed many times successfully, whereas the Decathlon is new and expensive.

Re: PSU recommendations?

That is the best 750 w PSU you can get. That is my pick for an 8800 system.

Re: PSU recommendations?

either will work with the m/b,i would go with the antec, but if you go to the 8800 you may find you have to upgrade again and will need something like the silverstone

Re: PSU recommendations?

if you plan on the 8800 in the near future

than this is your baby

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817256017

otherwise for the money; I would rather take the antec trio 650 for $109.00 vs the toughpower for $149.00

before I spent 149.00 on a dual rail unit I would go for the single rail with 60 amps at the link here

Re: PSU recommendations?

As long as it has a 24 or 20+4 pin connector and a 6-pin PCIe connector, it will work. But any PSU that will also handle an 8800 will need to be quality 750w like the suggestion I highlighted in my earlier post. Also, for a single 8800GTX, you will need two 6-pin PCIe connectors, not just one.

Re: PSU recommendations?

to add to Matt's suggestion, if it were me and I was buying a new PSU unit, I would want to make sure it has the new version 8 pin PCI express video card and newer 8 pin cpu motherboard connector, future video cards will have the eight pin pci express connector and newer motherboards all have the eight pin cpu power plug

with a little planning might be able to limit your future cash outlay for upgrades ?

Good thinking Joe, I forgot about the CPU power connector. That board probably has a 4 pin connection and all ATX12v PSUs have that connector, but it is always good idea to be future proofing, especially if you will want an 8800. Look for an 8-pin, or better yet, a 4+4 pin.

There's been many problems with the SilverStone Olympia and Decathlon units for giving the wrong 8-pin PCIe connector (contrary to whats advertised) 4/4 times in the last week by people who know about the workings of a PSU and SilverStone says "there's nothing wrong with that" and are being stubborn. All the units have also started making an obnoxious buzzing sound at loads above 300W which no one is taking responsibility of from their side. Their CS is going down the hill unless they sort this out quick, so we don't recommend SilverStone Olympia or Decathlon units until something is sorted out for the moment.

A little birdie has it from insiders, that SS has rotated the old stock and started shipping them out instead of the better new ones since of last week.

There isn't word of how good the Decathlon series is, no one knows, although its based on the Olympia, its still different and unreviewed. First signs are poor. I would definitely not recommend it yet until someone knows some real details about it and a few reviews surface. There are plenty more that are better known, reviewed good and tested over time, so move over to something that is known good rather than following a brand name.

The OCZ GameXstream 850 is perfect. The Enermax Galaxy 850 and Infinity 720, Silverstone Zeus 750 and 850, Etasis 750 and 850, PCP&C Silencer 750, Seventeam SSI EPS 12V V2.91 Series, Zippy Emacs 720, and 850, Ultra X-Finity 800 and X-Pro 800, Thermaltake Toughpower 750, Cooler Master Real Power Pro 850, Tagan U95/U96/Dual Engine 700W above models, Seasonic M12 700 are all perfect for you and allow future proofing.
