Is my computer bi-polar? (boot-up issues)
Hi, this is my first post here so, hello ;p
Well the issue is this, I have a new computer; full system specs: E6600 Core 2 Duo 2GB of Corsair Value Select RAM An EVGA e-GeForce 8800GTX And a P5NSLI mobo (ASUS). The thing is, everytime I start my computer, especially after it's been off for a while (5-10 hours), it never boots up on the first attempt. All I get is fan noise, everything lighting up nice and fancy, but my screen's getting no signal. If I shut the computer down while it's in this weird stage of working/not working, and turn it back on, usually it'll start up just fine. The key seems to be whether I hear the beep at a very early stage - translating into a successful boot-up. Everything in this rig is brand new, RAM has been Memtested using Memtest86, chipset, mobo, and GFX drivers are all up to date. Hope this isn't going to be too much trouble to solve, and I greatly appreciate any feedback whatsoever. Thanks in advance. |

Is it too much if I ask if any of you know of a good Hardware online store that ships internationally? I don't think I can get my hands on that kind of power supply here!

Re: Is my computer bi-polar? (boot-up issues)
i use fry's outpost for lightweight things as the shipping costs from the usa to australia are horrendous and they are the only ones i found that will ship
because of the cost of these supplies see if you can borrow a lower rated card to try in it to see if the problem disappears i usually advise borrowing a supply before buying to check, but when you get in this range it is not likely you will be able to a lower rated card will give the same result and will be easier to get your hands on

I don't really like BFG, but I found something in my country, how is this - http://bfgtech.com/power_supply_800W.html
As long as I'm taking your opinions on PSUs - http://shop4.outpost.com/product/489...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG Last edited by Hellbeans : 03-15-2007 at 04:01 AM. |

Re: Is my computer bi-polar? (boot-up issues)
If his PSU was underpowered for his hardware, wouldn't the system just not post at all? He's able to get into the OS after a reboot or two. And at that point, if it were underpowered, wouldn't it just cut off if he tried to play a graphically intense game that would require even more power from the PSU?

Re: Is my computer bi-polar? (boot-up issues)
being able to get into the op.system after a number of boots indicates that the power supply has been running pushed to it's limits and has started to deteriorate and is getting ready to fail

However, I nitpick alot, and thanks to that I have noticed that my system is not operating to it's maximum potential. Certain games which I'd expect to run at some settings, fail at some levels to produce good framerates etc. The crashes however can be attributed to bad RAM, as I had a Kingston pair before, and since I switched to Corsair VS, things feel alot better. My only problem is, after this big purchase, I don't think I have anything left to make the PSU purchase, since the store I built the computer at, don't offer any 750, 800, or other midrange PSUs. They joked to me saying "we have a 1000W PSU for $1K if you want it", I think I'm gonna come crashing on them very soon if this issue isn't solved. It's easy to throw the computer on them (which they've told me to do) and wait for them to tweak something I don't want them to tweak (oops, did we remove one power cord from your 8800GTX? must've been the wind.) Thanks for all the support anyway guys, hopefully this'll get solved ASAP. |
